From 21 July 2020 SEAFISH will no longer be carrying out surveys on fishing vessels; this work will revert to the MCA.

The MCA have decided to delegate some aspects of fishing vessel inspections to qualifying MCA Code Certifying Authorities.

Qualifying Certifying Authorities, who will be known as Fishing Vessel Certifying Authorities (FVCA), will be able to carry out the following work on fishing vessels:

  • In-build inspections on new fishing vessels under construction (under 12 metres RL only).

  • Pre-Registration inspections on existing vessels which are applying to become fishing vessels (under 24 metres RL).

  • Tonnage Measurement (under 15 metres RL and 15 metres - 24 metres RL).

  • Witnessing and conducting inclining experiments.

  • Conducting simple stability assessments.

  • Inspection of yards wishing to manufacture fishing vessels (GRP under 12 metres RL only).

All requests for inspections on fishing vessels from 21 July 2020 will need to be made to the MCA who will then provide further advice.

Paul Johnson is authorised to offer the services noted above through the SCMS Fishing Vessel Certifying Authority.
